If you snore when you sleep you may have sleep apnea. This is a common sleep disorder in which the affected person pauses breathing or breathes shallowly while sleeping. Because it disrupts normal sleep, people with sleep apnea may feel tired during the day. It can also cause other medical problems.
At Carnegie Dental Clinic, we treat mild to moderate sleep apnea by custom fitting you with a special mouth appliance or with laser therapy. These treatments are easier to tolerate than invasive surgery or a CPAP machine.
Before recommending an appliance or laser treatment, your dentist will refer you to have an assessment done to confirm you have sleep apnea and find out how severe it is. This will determine whether we can treat you independently or, if your disorder is severe, in cooperation with a physician.
