How often you need to have x-rays depends on your oral health. A healthy adult who hasn’t had cavities or other problems for a couple of years probably doesn’t need x-rays done at every appointment. If your dental health is less stable and your dentist is monitoring your progress, however, you may need x-rays more frequently.
If you’re not sure why a certain x-ray is being taken, ask your dentist.
Remember — dental x-rays deliver very little radiation; they’re an important tool to help your dentist ensure that small problems don’t develop into bigger ones.
