Not only do healthy teeth make for a great smile, but they are also important to your overall well-being. Many people think they have a good oral hygiene routine but are actually missing a few key steps. In order to make sure your mouth and teeth are really and truly clean, be sure to do all four of the steps listed below.
Brush Your Teeth
Most people make an effort to brush every day. It is important to do it right, however. You will want to brush your teeth at least twice a day. In a perfect world, you would do it after every meal. When you brush, imagine your mouth has been divided into 4 quadrants. Spend at least two minutes thoroughly brushing each quadrant, holding your brush at a 45° angle and paying special attention to the gum line.
The number of people that floss regularly is much lower than the number of people who brush daily. It is a vital part of a good oral hygiene routine, however. Food can easily get stuck in between teeth. If left there, it feeds bacteria and can quickly lead to decay. Floss your teeth once a day. Be sure to pay special attention to the back molars. They may be hard to reach, but they are also the most likely to be holding onto stubborn pieces of food.
Clean Your Tongue
For some reason, people seem to forget about their tongue when cleaning their mouth. This is not good because it can be a haven for bacteria. When it comes to cleaning your tongue, you have a lot of options. Some people use their toothbrush, brushing in a gentle, circular motion. Other people glide a piece of clean floss across their tongue. You can even buy a special tool, called a tongue scraper, to make sure you get the job done.
After you have finished the first three steps, it is important to remove anything lingering by thoroughly rinsing with mouthwash. Always follow the directions on your mouthwash bottle. Generally speaking, you will want to use it after every time you brush, so at least twice a day. If your mouthwash advises using it less often, at least rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after each brushing.
